What is the course about?

The art and science of making photographs of very small objects.
This course helps you explore the world of close-up and macro photography and the difference between them. Although essentially practical, the course also examines the uses of close-up and macro techniques in science, and as a technique for creative work. A limited amount of specialist equipment will be available.

What topics will we cover?

Appropriate equipment and techniques.
Lighting.
Practical sessions: enabling you to make your own close-up or macro photographs.
Creative possibilities for close-up photography.
Ideas for exhibiting your images or publishing them on the web.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Know the difference between close-up and macro photographs.
- Be able to choose appropriate equipment, lighting and techniques for a range of subjects.
- Have made some close-up photographs.
- Looked at examples from science and nature and discussed ways of using close-up techniques creatively.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for beginners.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions with guidance from your tutor in our dedicated photography studio.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
