This course is for people who want to develop strategies to progress their own fashion photography practice. It is a creative and practical course which looks at breaking down the elements in fashion photography and how to apply these to develop personal work. It is for people who already know how to use the basic functions of a camera (shutter speeds, aperture, film speed).
-The ideas that are behind fashion photography (including aesthetics, culture, identity, technology and craft) and strategies to broaden your own work with this knowledge.
- Basic introduction to lighting and how to choose lighting to enhance your work.
- The use of location or studio shoots. We will consider why and when you would use them.
- Basic introduction to the infrastructure of the industry including stylists, hair and make-up artists and fashion designers.
- Consider key influential fashion photographers from different perspectives of fashion photography.
- Opportunities to bring in work for group review.
- Identify key strategies within fashion photography
- Understand how you can develop ways to improve your work
- Understand key lighting techniques
- Be able to apply key lighting techniques to a photo shoot to help communicate your ideas and issues.
- Name fashion photographers that have similar concerns to you.
- Understand how fashion photographers influence your practice.
This is a beginners class to the specialism of Fashion photography but a knowledge of basic functions of the camera (eg. aperture, shutter speeds, film speed) will be needed. Students will benefit most from the course if they are starting to produce their own work.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
This is a creative, practical course and teaching will be flexible to address students' individual concerns. It will focus on visuals and ideas using a mixture of presentations, practical exercises, group discussion and feedback on your work.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback will relate to, and help you in, your creative and technical approach to fashion photography. Your sketch book will provide a useful record of your progress.
