Course outline

What is the course about?

A creative, image-led course, looking at the technical, social and historic issues involved in photographing the landscape. Key goals are to develop sophisticated, aesthetic and dynamic work by evolving an understanding of visual language, photographic technique and relevant photographic history. Included will be a consideration of how visual language, photographic techniques and equipment can be used to convey different meanings and help strengthen photographic work and communicate personal influences.

What topics will we cover?

We will look at creative and technical concepts in photographing landscapes and the urban environment, including lighting, mood, perspective, use of filters and post-production issues. The focus will be on how to develop and strengthen your photographic work through consideration of the cultural and social issues, techniques and styles behind landscape photography. We will discuss the work of prominent photographers in this field. You will take photographs of the urban environment on location in London (in the city and by the river) and will work on a self-motivated project of your own, recorded in an ideas book. We will address each other's progress technically and creatively throughout the course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the styles and issues within landscape photography that can be applied to strengthen your photography
- Understand how to design a more complex, interesting, aesthetic and personally relevant photographs.
- Take photographs to a set brief showing the landscape environment.
- Understand post-production to enhance your work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at people who know how to use a camera on a manual setting (this is correct measurements and calculations for F stop and shutter speed adjustment) and are interested in modern/contemporary landscape photography. You will ideally be open to experimenting and have an interest in dynamic and challenging photography. Either film or digital cameras may be used.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs, basic photographic/art language and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you take part fully in the class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, use of computers, practical exercises, game play, group discussion and feedback. You will take your own photographs to a set brief and this will be reviewed both individually and in groups. The course will include photographing on location in central London.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to cover the cost of print and/or film processing, an ideas book and travel to suggested locations in central London. You should have your own camera.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The course is designed for you to create a better understanding of what you want to achieve with your own photographic practice. By the end of the course, you could look at post-production and Photoshop, art history or a modern art course, depending on where you want to take your work.
