A practical course exploring how to improve your photographic technique, expand your creativity and develop your commercial business and professional skills in this competitive market.
Practical exercises in photography covering creative techniques and equipment including functions such as aperture and shutter speed. You will examine skills used to photograph people, portraits, landscapes, and composition.You will develop an understanding in marketing images and your legal rights as regards copyright and issues of ownership. A comparison will be made between digital and film mediums and their relative advantages when travelling. There will be an opportunity to take photos in nearby London locations. Each week you will be offered critical analysis of your work both individually and in a group. Tutors will be on hand to provide feedback and support for your chosen project.

For people with cameras and basic photography skills and travelers keen to ‘evoke a sense of place’ by integrating facts, quotes or captions to their photos. Basic written English skills and an interest in photography are essential. Knowledge of basic photographic technique is useful but not essential.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
The course will be interactive, with demonstrations and visuals to illustrate how to create strong travel images. Examples of written travel features will be analysed to show how to construct words or captions to accompany images. Feedback will be given throughout the course with critical analysis of your work. Your project skills will be developed through practical exercises using both words and images and through analysis of published features in magazines and newspapers.
If you bring in a film camera you will need to buy film and pay for negative and processing costs.
You will need to pay costs for travel to suggested locations in London, and you may wish to buy travel literature, travel journals and practical photography journals. You need to bring a camera (digital or film) capable of taking good quality images with some manual/ priority mode functions such as exposure compensation.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be expected to present your completed photo feature during the last session.
