At an introductory level:
History of the people and institutions who buy and collect photography.
The state of the current market for historic and contemporary work, and possible values.
Recognising techniques and the technology used by photographers, and why it might be relevant.
Collecting for value or interest?
How to store and exhibit work you might buy.
Copyright.
Discussion about Photo London and other international and local expositions.
Ideas about what direction the ‘market’ might go in the future.
- An understanding of the historic context within which the current practice of collecting has developed.
- Be able to recognise the work of the most prominent photographers and areas of photography collected today.
- Know how agents, galleries and museums operate, in relation to individual collectors
- Some knowledge about the world of collecting photography, as a business.
- Have an informed opinion about the work being shown at Photo London.
Suitable for anyone interested in buying photography who has little or no experience of doing so.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you feedback through discussion during the session .
