Photography and mapping have intersected at key points in the developmental and cultural history of both mediums. The two disciplines first intertwined in the mid nineteenth century with some of the most revered landscape photographs of the period 1860-80s functioning as by- products of commercial, military or governmental land survey expeditions.
Aerial reconnaissance photography, developed during the First World War, necessitated the role of an interpreter: a skilled scrutiniser of images trained to distinguish between military and civilian targets.
Photography gained a new form of currency in the art world in the 1960s as a documentary tool of ‘land’ and ‘action’ art, a conceptual art practice that commonly drew upon the principles of mapping.
Photography and mapping have linked, once again to form one of the most popular applications on the internet. Searches for Google Earth are currently 23 times higher than searches for the most searched for celebrity on the internet.
The course will study the key themes of exploration, cartography, the sublime, the flaneur and the wanderer, conceptual art, reconnaissance, Psychogeography and ecology. Writers considered will include Charles Baudelaire, Michel Foucault and Walter Benjamin.
