Course outline

What is the course about?

This short course is a taster in exploring the field of applied photography in the ‘public realm’. London is one of a number of European capitals renowned for innovations and interventions in public space. The tradition of public art has evolved from civic or public sculpture to installation, performance and now works of sound and/or light that are more ‘event-like’ in nature. Photography is a relative newcomer to this type of practice as, for the first time, we notice the transposition of photographic imagery into public space and it is this phenomenon the course will explore. From the use of large scale photoworks per se, to the way that diverse artists including architects and planners play with photographic renditions and a transformation of the public realm.

What topics will we cover?

A full scheme of work will be given out at the first session.
- The field of Public Art and the history and evolution of Photography as an art medium in this field
- The multiple and varied uses of photography not only in creating images in contemporary public spaces but ,through extension, in the means by which architects and planners re-envision public space itself.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Describe and discuss a variety of photographically-based public artworks
- Analyse a variety of photographically-based public artworks
- Critically understand the ways in which the photographic motivates the visualisation and creation of the public sphere.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners and more experienced artist/photographers and others interested in this field.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The sessions will be taught using a combination of handouts/slideshow presentations, discussion and some reading. A personal research element in documenting public art/public space will be encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
