A basic practical course learning about appropriate equipment, techniques, lighting, posing, managing people and producing work to a brief or to convey character. Also looks at the history of studio portrait photography.
Photographing with Continuous source lights (eg Tungsten) and Flash
Flash Lighting
The effect that choice of equipment has on the ‘style’ of photograph.

Analysing images to consider how they have been lit.
Create a portrait using continuous light (Tungsten / Fluorescent)
Create a portrait using studio flash lighting
Photograph a small group using studio lighting
Control the level of contrast desired by the use of reflectors, light shapers and ‘fill lights’.
Look at photographic images and analyse how they have been lit.
You will be expected to be fairly proficient in the use of the manual exposure settings of a camera.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be encouraged to look at images and consider and discuss the way they are lit and posed.
Bring your camera (There are also City Lit digital SLRs you are welcome to borrow during the hours of the course).

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
