Course outline

What is the course about?

The course will introduce students to different architectural styles and how to photograph the structures. Consideration will be given to time of day, angle of view and dealing with security guards when photographing from public space.

What topics will we cover?

- Optimum time of day for photography
- Angle of view and choice of lens
- Overview of a particular architect’s work in the City
- Working safely and legally in public in the City.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify differing architectural styles of building in the City
- Recognise optimum time to photograph a particular aspect of a building
- Demonstrate safe and considerate working practice in a public space
- Understand your legal right to photograph buildings from a public place
- Download and process images using Photoshop. Understand and use the colour balance and perspective correction tools.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is not a beginner’s class. Students should be able to operate manual functions of their cameras. Students should also have an interest in architecture and the built environment. Students should be computer literate at a basic level and have control of the functions of their cameras. . Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross platform. If you have never used a computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers' useful.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises at locations in the City. The photography studio uses a computer projector for presentations and viewing of images. Each student will have their own Apple Mac computer to work on. Students may want to continue working outside of class to build portfolio.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to bring some images on a CD or memory stick for discussion, a digital camera and you are encouraged to take notes. The City Lit has digital SLR cameras you may borrow during lesson time.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
