Course outline

What is the course about?

The course has a strong practical base. You will work on location with other members of the group and conduct basic research into aspects of London’s Art, Architecture and Heritage that interest you. Hopefully you will find interesting parts of the city that you have not seen before or have not had time to explore. You will be encouraged to participate in group discussions, take part in practical exercises to improve your photographic technique and learn about photography as a means of communication.

What topics will we cover?

You will explore photographic technique and effective use of your camera, composition, lighting, the importance of editing photographs and managing a digital work flow on apple Mac computers in the photo studio.
A full course outline will be given out at the first session.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Have a better understanding of the technical and creative challenges involved in photographing these aspects of London.
- Feel more confident about your own photographic technique.
- Take visually engaging pictures.
- Take better pictures and improve your compositional skills.
- Have a better knowledge of London’s Art, Architecture and Heritage.
- Improve your picture editing skills.
- Have a better understanding of how to use pictures to communicate ideas.
- Improve your knowledge of using available light effectively.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for any level as this is not a highly technical course, however, you should have an understanding of the basic functions of your SLR camera. Students should be computer literate at a basic level. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross platform. If you have never used a computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ that runs each term, helpful.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through Lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, small group work, group discussion and individual assistance. Work will take place in the studio and on location shoots.
Through a structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises and image based discussions. The photography studio uses a computer projector for presentations and viewing of images. Each student will have their own computer to work on.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a camera to the first session if you have one.

You may wish to bring some images on a CD or memory stick for discussion. You are encouraged to take notes. If you do not have a camera the City Lit has cameras you may borrow during lesson time.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
