Course outline

What is the course about?

Develop and improve your compositional and technical skills as well as your approach to photographing architecture, people and cityscapes. There will be an end of course group exhibition at City Lit.

What topics will we cover?

This course allows you the opportunity explore London through photography and find interesting corners of the city you might not have had the time to visit or explore photographically. You will get expert advice by a practicing photographer, work on-location and be introduced to ideas, technique and composition through lectures and demonstrations, practical assignments and discussion and feedback on your own and fellow students’ work. You will have access to state of the art computers in the recently opened photo studio. At the end of the course you will be able to contribute a few of your images to a group exhibition that will take place at City Lit.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify the technical and creative challenges involved in photographing London’s cityscapes, architecture and people.
- Develop the necessary skills to photograph these aspects of London.
- Develop your knowledge of London.
- Recognise the importance of lighting and composition.
- Recognise the importance of editing photographs.
- Edit images for exhibition.
- Contribute to the group exhibition.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for any level as this is not a highly technical course; however, basic photographic knowledge and SLR
camera handling skills are desirable. Some of the topics covered during the course will require the use of digital
images. Basic digital photography and computer skills are not a pre-requisite but will be a plus.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures and demonstrations. Practical exercises. Group discussion and individual tutoring as well as group work.
Practical assignments. Photographing on-location. Theory and analysis of photographs. Discussions and feedback on own and fellow students’ work produced during the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a camera to the first session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Depending on your level and commitment you may elect for more specialised photographic courses or others with a fine art orientation.
