Course outline

What is the course about?

Taking photographs of buildings and urban landscapes in London in different styles. Aspects covered include photographing detail, the effect of the surrounding environment, how different visual techniques affect meaning and the appropriateness of different styles.

What topics will we cover?

We will be looking in detail at the work of architectural and landscape photographers, and discussing their work. We will talk about the use of different film types and filters to enhance your photographs, and take photographs on location in London (in the city and by the river). The possibilities and problems of digital photography will also be considered.
We shall talk about the importance of lighting and mood in your photographs, and about depth of field and its importance in architectural and landscape photography.

You will be working on your own projects, taking photographs to show the environment and architectural detail.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the problems and possibilities of digital photography in relation to film photography
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of the work of photographers of Urban Landscapes and Architecture.
- Be able to use light to enhance your photography
- Be able to use depth of field to enhance your photographs
- Take photographs showing the environment and architectural detail.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For those with some basic experience of photography. You will need a manual (SLR) camera (35mm or digital) and be able to operate it. Ideally you will have an interest in buildings and landscape.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, discussion, viewing slides and by taking your own photographs. We shall have individual analysis and group discussions about the photographs you take during the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to cover the cost of purchasing films and processing, colour films (negatives or slides), and travel to suggested locations in London. You may wish to buy travel literature, travel journals or practical photography journals. You should have your own camera.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will present and receive feedback on your completed project during the last class.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
