Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to increase your confidence taking candid photographs of people in public environments. The method that characterises street photography involves documenting contemporary urban life in a spontaneous and naturalistic way with no interaction between photographer and subjects. Every session will involve shooting on location in some of the most vibrant and dynamic areas of London. The strong practical basis will be complemented by group discussions and editing sessions. You will be encouraged to develop critical and visual awareness as well as an understanding of photography as a means of communication. During the course you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the course blog and participate in online forums.

What topics will we cover?

Traditional and contemporary approaches to street photography, both in colour and B&W. History of documentary photography and an overview of the work of influential contemporary practitioners. Practical, ethical and legal considerations. Specialist techniques for quick reflexive picture-taking. Narrative and composition, telling a story with a single image. Online street photography collectives.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have a better understanding of the evolution of street photography in the last 100 years
Feel more confident about taking candid photographs of people in public
Have developed your own photographic technique
Show evidence of developing observational skills and quicker reflexes
Have a better understanding of the legal framework for taking photographs in public.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at people confident with the use of a DSLR or an advanced digital compact camera. Ideally suited to those with some experience in people photography, the course is also appropriate for people with an interest in reportage and documentary photography, even if they have no prior experience in the genre.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by a series of talks, handouts, demonstrations and practical exercises. You are encouraged to practice in your own time to embed the skills and information covered on the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your camera and possibly a notebook. The City Lit has digital SLRs and tripods which you are welcome to borrow during the hours of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
