Course outline

What is the course about?

Teaching people the basic manual functions of a camera using non-technical language. Developing an ability to take better pictures and use photography as a form of self-expression.

What topics will we cover?

The basic mechanics of photography / choice of camera / exposure / shutter speed settings & movement / apertures, f. stops & depth of field, composition, lighting & looking / on-going project.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Produce photographs demonstrating and re-enforcing technical & theoretical understanding.
- Ability to use manual functions on your cameras. Inspiration for creative picture making.
- Better understanding of light.
- Option to do ongoing project during the course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For complete beginners or anyone needing a technical refresher. Students must have a manual function on their cameras (i.e. be able to change the f. stops and shutter speed settings).

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Looking at photographs / lectures and discussions / emphasis on practical projects to support theoretical and technical learning; group and pair work; discussions and feedback on own and each others work produced during the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Please bring scrapbook to class (just a cheap one). Bring a camera. Bring tripod if you have one but it is not necessary.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. By bringing in own photographs from the course and discussing results. Gradual development from one skill to the next, checking back to what youve already learnt along the way. By trying new things and doing an on-going project throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; study support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 189 of the 09-10 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
