Course outline

What is the course about?

How to use your camera in a technically competent and visually interesting way, and how you might use photography as a form of creative self-expression.

What topics will we cover?

The basic mechanics of photography which will include but not be limited to:
- choice of digital or film camera;
- exposure and taking light readings;
- shutter speed settings and movement;
- apertures (f stops) and depth of field;
- composition and lighting
- creative approaches to photographing different subjects.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Produce photographs demonstrating some technical and theoretical understanding.
- Produce visually interesting photographs.
- Have a better understanding of the manual functions on your camera
- Identify and utilise different sources of light ie. daylight and artificial light.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge required. For complete beginners or anyone needing a technical refresher. You must have manual functions on your camera (i.e. be able to change the F. stops and shutter speed settings). Film or digital cameras are equally welcome and a comparison will be made during the course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures and demonstrations. Practical exercises. Discussion and individual tutoring as well as group work. Practical project work. Looking at photographs and work produced during the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You might need to pay for up to three rolls of film, together with processing and printing - you can use colour or black and white. Please bring a camera which has a manual setting (either digital or film) and a tripod if you have one. If you do not have a camera you will be supplied with one for use in the class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
