Course outline

What is the course about?

This course introduces you to the practice and theory of photography as a fine art practice and relates it to your own work. We will explore the history, concepts and theories behind the position of photography within fine art. We will consider the technology and techniques behind current fine art photography production and opportunities for exhibiting and publishing work.

What topics will we cover?

At an introductory level:
- The history of photography as a fine art.
- Concepts, ideas and theories.
- Technology and how it affects what is produced.
- Current fine art photography practice – survey of work being produced, exhibited and published now.
- Exhibiting or publishing work and what is most appropriate.
- The ‘business’ of fine art photography – agents, exhibiting, museums and galleries, what to charge and how to get your work recognised. Publicity and marketing.
- Seminar session at which individuals' portfolios are looked at by the class and feedback given by the tutor and other class members, along with advice.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand the historical context within which current practice has developed
- recognise the work of the most prominent photographers working as fine artists today, and outline what they are trying to achieve
- understand how technology has affected what is produced in fine art photography.
- benefit from feedback and comments about your own work, with help regarding how you might progress
- know about the projects of other contemporary photographers.
- demonstrate an awareness of how fine art photography functions as a business.
- develop strategies for the publicity and marketing of your own work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course to the specialism of contemporary art photography. You will be expected to have a basic knowledge of the manual functions of your camera. This course is also of interest to those who are not photographers and want an introduction to the subject of contemporary art photography within an historical context.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Illustrated lectures, group discussion and viewing and discussing the work of contemporary artists. You will also have opportunities to show and receive tutor and peer feedback on your own work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need to bring some examples of your own work to take advantage of opportunities for feedback and progression. If you are not a practitioner you will not be expected to bring work but will be invited to participate in the discussion and feedback sessions.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
