Course outline

What is the course about?

Discover the extent of fine art practice which uses photography. Improve technical knowledge and skills, and discuss problems. Bring your own work, and look at other people’s portfolios. Examine ways to get your work exhibited and known.

What topics will we cover?

At an introductory level:
The history of photography as a fine art.
Concepts, ideas and theories.
Technology and how it affects what is produced.
Current fine art photography practice – survey of work being produced, exhibited and published now.
Exhibiting or publishing work and what is most appropriate.
The ‘business’ of fine art photography – agents, exhibiting, museums and galleries, what to charge and how to get your work recognised. Publicity and marketing.
Seminar session at which individuals portfolios are looked at by the class and feedback given by the tutor and other class members, along with advice.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- An understanding of the historic context within which current practice has developed.
- Be able to recognise the work of the most prominent photographers working as fine artists today , and be able to outline what they are trying to achieve.
- Feedback and comments about your own work with help regarding how you might progress.
- An insight into what projects others are working on.
- Some knowledge about the world of fine art photography as a business.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For photographers with an interest in Fine Art Photography practice at the beginning of
their ‘career ‘ in this particular area; or those who are not photographers and want an introduction to the subject within an historical context.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, group discussion, viewing recognised work, discussion with tutor, showing your own work (if appropriate), group session looking at a range of portfolios from other students. You need to bring a few examples of your own work if you want to fully participate, but if you are just coming out of general interest and are not a practitioner come anyway without work and learn from what others are attempting.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you feedback through discussion during the sessions .

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
