Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is a practical and contextual introduction into the notions of place and space that is designed for students to develop and/or improve their understanding of the context and their photographic approach.

What topics will we cover?

A full scheme of work will be given out at the first session.
- Appreciation and critique of visual work from a variety of practitioners.
- Theories and concepts of space and place
- Brief enquiry into the notions of time, identity, memory and experience
- Evaluation of students’ previous photography in relation to the topic
- Use of light when exploring a site
- Use of significant detail when exploring a site
- Critique of work produced during the course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Explain ideas of space, place and surrounding issues
- Use light and significant detail in your work to good effect
- Take steps to move forward by using reference points from the course
- Develop new ideas to make your photography more relevant to your aims
- Produce a coherent piece of photographic work surrounding a particular theme
- Approach technical problems with more confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Previous experience in photography is helpful but not essential. An understanding of technical basics like aperture and shutter speed would be helpful.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

During this session you will participate in lectures and presentations, seminars, discussion and group work. Critiques of students’ work will form an important role in the learning process from the second week forward.
It is therefore essential that students are able to undertake work towards a negotiated individual or group assignment between most sessions and bring their work to the next session for discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

If possible students should bring their photographic equipment they intend to use, as well as a selection of photographs taken to date in paper or electronic format.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be time for individual questions. Feedback and discussion of your own work will is an important element of the course,.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
