A guide to the exhibition process, from early planning stages to the private view and after. The course is taught by Shirley Read author of the definitive book on the subject, ‘Exhibiting Photography: A Practical Guide to Choosing a Space, Displaying Your Work, and Everything in Between’, published by Focal Press.

It is for everyone who wants to exhibit, but especially those who have little or no experience of exhibiting their photographs.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Informally through discussion and visual display. You will be encouraged to visit exhibitions in your own time to inform discussion in class.
There are no extra costs but please bring a notebook. If you want to bring an exhibition project for class discussion, please organise it so that it will be straightforward to do so in a group context (by, for instance, bringing a set of small prints to edit or a floor plan to help with presentational issues).

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

The next step is to exhibit your photographs. You could think of doing a course on framing or a photography portfolio course. You can develop your interests in photography further through a wide range of practical and theoretical courses at City Lit. Please see the prospectus or website for further details.
