You will explore the tradition of the documentary photo-essay and adapt it to a contemporary digital form and format for digital and online platforms. You will produce a short digital or multi-media photo-story and learn about simple story-telling and editing techniques using still digital images with sound for outmost effect.
Story-telling techniques relevant to documentary photography and how they are absorbed or transformed by multi-media documentary slideshows; conveying meaning and information about your topic with respect to online viewing and reading time restrictions; the creative potential of sound in still documentary photography essays; importing still digital images into an editing program to produce simple still-based movies and slide-shows; suitable file sizes and formats for online viewing; online showcasing opportunities for documentary digital stories.
- Import images into Photoshop to perform simple edits
- Output still digital photographs to a simple editing program producing slideshows or stills-based movie files
- Use appropriate digital file types and resize for online publishing and slideshow or movie viewing
- Sequence creatively your digital photographs to produce a short digital movie or slideshow of appropriate length for online viewing
- Find submission opportunities online for your digital photo-story.
The course is aimed at students who are beginning to develop a new photography project independently or wish to pursue one of their existing projects. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs, health and safety information, and to take part in informal group discussion.
You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught via practical workshops, short presentations, demonstrations and handouts. You will also have the option to pursue an individual project.
