Course outline

What is the course about?

You will explore the tradition of the documentary photo-essay and adapt it to a contemporary digital form and format for digital and online platforms. You will produce a short digital or multi-media photo-story and learn about simple story-telling and editing techniques using still digital images with sound for outmost effect.

What topics will we cover?

Story-telling techniques relevant to documentary photography and how they are absorbed or transformed by multi-media documentary slideshows; conveying meaning and information about your topic with respect to online viewing and reading time restrictions; the creative potential of sound in still documentary photography essays; importing still digital images into an editing program to produce simple still-based movies and slide-shows; suitable file sizes and formats for online viewing; online showcasing opportunities for documentary digital stories.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Import images into Photoshop to perform simple edits
- Output still digital photographs to a simple editing program producing slideshows or stills-based movie files
- Use appropriate digital file types and resize for online publishing and slideshow or movie viewing
- Sequence creatively your digital photographs to produce a short digital movie or slideshow of appropriate length for online viewing
- Find submission opportunities online for your digital photo-story.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at students who are beginning to develop a new photography project independently or wish to pursue one of their existing projects. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs, health and safety information, and to take part in informal group discussion.
You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught via practical workshops, short presentations, demonstrations and handouts. You will also have the option to pursue an individual project.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
