Course outline

What is the course about?

During an hour-long slot, you will be supported individually in discussing and reviewing your existing photographic portfolio in a way that is relevant to contemporary professional photographic practices and to industry standards.

You will be guided in ways to present your work in formats appropriate to their purpose, and how to research platforms to showcase, exhibit or publish your work. You will be given constructive advice on how to improve content development, and about its relationship to format and platforms of publication or presentation of your work to a public.

What topics will we cover?

You will be advised on how to improve the format of presentation of your work with relevance to a specific field of the industry, or to a specific institution or project in a manner appropriate to your own work. This could include commercial product photography, editorial and photojournalistic photography for magazine or book publication, fine art portfolios for exhibition purpose or gallery representation, as well as Diplomas, BA, or MA applications portfolios.

You will be guided on career directions and paths to take according to specific professional fields. You will be advised on how to use appropriate platforms to find career opportunities as various as assisting on commercial shoots, voluntary photography work for charity, public showcasing, and exhibitions and funding submissions.

You will be guided to useful resources to further support content or ideas development appropriate to your own practice and project(s) and will be advised on how to further edit your work to improve content, visual consistency and the originality of your own photographic style.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Present your portfolio of photographic work in appropriate formats suited to purpose and industry standards
- Use appropriate resources to improve content development with relevance to contemporary commercial and creative practices in photography
- Research appropriate resources for career opportunities, from photography jobs to exhibitions, showcasing and funding opportunities
- Edit your work efficiently to improve content development and the visual consistency and impact of your photographic projects
- Identify and strengthen the originality of your own photographic style in relationship to contemporary strands in photography
- Present your portfolio to the appropriate platform, institution or field of industry.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suited to people who are able to take photographs independently. You should have some understanding of how to use the manual settings of a camera, as well as some notions of lighting.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions in English, and read hand-outs and health and safety information.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught via a one-hour long tutorial on a one-to-one basis. You will undertake a discussion with your tutor who will provide you with a constructive assessment of your portfolio, career advice and guidance, and will answer your questions with care for your specific field of photographic practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be expected to cover the costs of the materials you use. Bring your portfolio of work in the form of prints or portfolio book and a visual diary if appropriate.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

Alternatively, you may wish to enrol on a studio-based photography course to improve the technical aspects of your practice, or a photography course with a fine art orientation.
