Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is a mix of practical printing and taught sessions and is unique in giving you five sessions to print your work using our Epson Photo inkjet printers. Learn about colour management, different paper types and how to use Photoshop to produce better portfolio and exhibition prints.

** You must bring your own images to the first class.

What topics will we cover?

- Using Photoshop and non-destructive image techniques to achieve high quality prints
- Colour managing your workflow
- Test prints
- Black and white toned images
- Hands-on, practical experience of printing your work on different kinds of inkjet paper
- How to load and use profiles for specialist paper.
- Producing a set of prints (maximum 10 A4 or 6 A3 size).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use Photoshop and basic image adjustment to achieve high quality prints
- Print your work on different kinds of inkjet paper using an inkjet printer
- Change the settings on the printer software to match your paper and upload profiles for specialist paper types
- Take away a portfolio of inkjet prints (maximum 10 A4 or 6 A3 size).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for those who already have an understanding of the basics of digital printing and who want to improve the quality of their prints. A basic knowledge of Photoshop and digital file management is also required.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mix of practical printing and taught sessions in a dedicated studio environment using Apple Mac computers, Epson printers and high quality paper.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring in your own images to your first class – either on CD/DVD, memory stick, external hard disc or on your digital camera.

We provide a limited amount of Epson premium glossy paper and Epson matt heavyweight paper. If you want to print on other papers you will need to purchase these yourself. (Try Silverprint for a good selection of inkjet papers).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
