The course is a practical and contextual introduction into sports photography that is designed for students to develop and improve their skills in sports photography.
A full scheme of work will be given out at the first session but topics will include:
- a brief history of the development of sports photography
- what constitutes a good sports photograph?
- choosing equipment.
- what events are available to me?
- how do I position myself?
- brief investigation into the commercialisation of extreme sports
- how do I get my work published?
- can I earn money with this?
- where to go from here – individual action plan.
- Approach technical problems with more confidence
- Explain the development of sports photography up to this date
- Understand how concepts and techniques relate to your own practice
- Take better sports photographs technically
- Take sports photographs that contain interesting conceptual ideas.
This course is for beginners of the specialism of Sports Photography. You will be expected to have an understanding of the basic functions of your digital camera.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
During this course you will participate in a lecture/presentation, seminar, discussion and group work. There will not be any work outside class but students will leave with an action plan they can follow up.
There are no other costs. You are expected to bring your own digital camera and are welcome to bring any other photographic equipment that you intend to use for sports photography (including telephoto lenses).

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be time for individual questions.
