Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is an ideal follow up to the beginner's photography course. As well as revising and refreshing old skills you will learn new technical skills and how to apply them to explore different themes and styles of photography. This will be done in a supportive group setting.

What topics will we cover?

- Exploring themes and different styles of photographs.
- Experimenting with exposure readings.
- Photographing silhouettes.
- Use of different lenses.
- Looking at lighting and the use of shadow
- Revision of manual functions of the camera.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use the shutter speed and aperture controls (f stops) on your camera effectively
- Expose images correctly in relatively challenging situations, and use exposure as part of the creative process
- Create silhouette images and deal with backlit situations
- Know what type of lens to choose
- Use light and shadows to create images.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For those who have completed a beginner's course or have a grasp of the basic functions of a 35mm SLR camera or the equivalent (ie. not a point-and-shoot camera).

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, illustrated lectures, practical exercises and individual assistance. You will constantly receive and be invited to contribute to critical feedback on your own and each other's photographs.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Film and processing - you can use colour or black and white. If you use a digital camera you will need to pay for prints. Please bring a scrapbook to class (just a cheap one), a 35mm SLR camera or equivalent with whatever lenses you have, and a tripod if you have one. If you do not have a camera you will be provided with one for use during the class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
