Course outline

What is the course about?

- You will develop drawing skills based on observation and experimentation with a variety of media
- You will develop visual ideas for printmaking by drawing from observation, memory and imagination
- You will create prints using a variety of media: linocut, woodcutting, collagraph.

What topics will we cover?

- You will work on individual drawing projects based on object drawing, personal themes, portraiture and work from imagination.
- You will work on individual printmaking projects based on sketches and drawings.
- There will be an opportunity to work on a group project to be negotiated with the group
- Sketching visits to galleries and museums will be arranged.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Explore and experiment with drawing and print media
- Produce a folio of drawings in a variety of media
- Produce an experimental sketchbook of drawings
- Produce examples of printmaking including drypoint, collographs and lino prints
- Participate in group discussion

The class is especially suitable if you need to work on your skills about measuring, shapes and putting things in order. You will negotiate with the tutor more specific outcomes, based on the above, to suit your ability and experience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for students with learning difficulties and with mixed ability in the subject. You need to be able to participate in shared activities with less support and sustain concentration for short periods. You need to be able to show an interest in the subject.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Group work
- Pair work
- Practical exercises
- Tutor demonstration.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from the tutor. Self assessment, supported by the tutor. Termly tutor reports. We will assess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on Statements of Learning throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student feedback is encouraged throughout the course. All students have a personal tutor to whom they can give feedback about their courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
