Get started on the computer. Learn to use different tools and programmes independently. Work with words, pictures and photographs. Make a poster or greeting card. You are expected to have access to a computer outside the classroom so you can practise the skills you are learning.

Course outline

What is the course about?

You will learn how to start up the computer, do your own work and save it. You will work with words and pictures about yourself or using information from the internet. You will have an opportunity to try word processing, Powerpoint slides, or Publisher.

What topics will we cover?

Term 1
- Computer basics
- Getting started on word processing
- Combining pictures and words
- Using computers in the library
Term 2
- Getting started on the internet
- Searching the internet for pictures and information
Term 3
- Introduction to web design using picture and text.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Term 1
- Start up the computer, open work and save it.
- Type a story or make a poster
Term 2
- Search the internet
- Explore accessible websites
Term 3
- Create an accessible web page (whole group work).
This class is especially suitable if you are working on your reading and writing skills.
You will negotiate with the tutor more specific outcomes, based on the above, to suit your ability and experience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for students with learning difficulties and with mixed ability in the subject. You need to be able to participate in shared activities with less support and sustain concentration for short periods, and show interest in the subject.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

through demonstration

- through discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from the tutor. Self assessment, supported by the tutor. Termly tutor reports. We will assess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on Statements of Learning throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student feedback is encouraged throughout the course. All students have a personal tutor to whom they can give feedback about their courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
