Course outline

What is the course about?

Developing or improving your skills in playing jazz pieces.

What topics will we cover?

- Choosing a rhythm or melody instrument to play
- Working on a 12-bar blues
- Exercises in swing feel and Latin feel
- Learning to play pieces
- Preparing for a performance at the end of term 3.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Learn at least 3 new pieces
- Improve your technique on your instrument for playing swing
- Play a melody or percussion part in a jazz piece in Latin or rock feel
- Begin to sing in 'scat' style
- Develop your improvising skills
- Improve your performance skills
- Develop your skills in reading words or pictures to help you remember music.
You will negotiate with the tutor more specific outcomes, based on the above, to suit your ability and experience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Mixed musical level and with a learning difficulty. You need to be able to participate in shared activities with little or no support and sustain concentration for short periods. You need to be able to show an interest in the subject.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- The tutor will demonstrate singing and playing and you can join in - Practice in remembering melodies and rhythms - Exercises to learn or improve the way you improvise - Listening to recordings and saying what we think of them.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from the tutor.
Self assessment, supported by the tutor.
Termly tutor reports.
We will assess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on Statements of Learning throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student feedback is encouraged throughout the course. All students have a personal tutor to whom they can give feedback about their courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
