Course outline

What is the course about?

Learning about London by visiting historical sites and places of interest
- Participating in group discussion in class
- researching topics using library and internet
- using video camera and digital camera to record and document class visits.
- working towards a class presentation on a London theme.

What topics will we cover?

- Visiting places of historical and contemporary interest on foot, by bus and by tube
- Finding out about the buildings or local area.
- Working with other group members
- Finding out further London related information from books, leaflets, pictures, exhibitions and Internet.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Research London related topics
- Improve skills in working with others
- Use a digital camera on visits
This class is especially suitable if you need to:
- Improve skills in recording what you know on paper

You will negotiate with the tutor more specific outcomes, based on the above, to suit your ability and experience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for students with learning difficulties and with mixed ability in the subject. You need to be able to listen and attend to familiar people, and show interest in the subject.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group discussion
- class visits with questions and answer about places, people and History
- small group work to find out and record information
- complete class quizzes on places visited.
- Record what you have found out, with tutor support.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from the tutor. Self assessment, supported by the tutor. Termly tutor reports. We will assess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on Statements of Learning throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student feedback is encouraged throughout the course. All students have a personal tutor to whom they can give feedback about their courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
