What is the course about?

This course has a person-centred approach to learning:
Learn to speak up and join in with others in a group. You may need support to take part. You will work with pictures, multimedia and other people.

What topics will we cover?

You can achieve a qualification in Personal Progress, Entry 1, consisting of the following units:
2010-11: Engage with other people; Engage with events; Engage with objects; Being a part of things (optional unit).
2011-12: All about me; Developing communication skills (optional unit).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Participate in group learning
- Work with cameras and computers
- Work with ideas and pictures
- Use experience to choose further courses in Progress

This class is especially suitable if you are not used to learning in a group.

You will negotiate with the tutor more specific outcomes, based on the above, to suit your ability and experience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course for students with learning difficulties, who may have higher support needs, have little experience of group learning or are new to the college environment. You need to be able to (with support) focus and participate in activities, for at least a short period of time; take turns in interaction with a familiar person; and imitate actions or gestures of a familiar person.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Group work
- Question and answer
- Demonstration and practical work
- Local visits to places of interest.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from the tutor. Self assessment, supported by the tutor. Termly tutor reports. We will assess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on Statements of Learning throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student feedback is encouraged throughout the course. All students have a personal tutor to whom they can give feedback about their courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
