Learn to share experiences with other people, using words, photography, digital video and personal objects. You will have a choice of giving a presentation to the group about yourself or about a famous
person. This is for you if you are ready to join in discussions, whether you are just starting to speak up, or are confident about it. You can achieve a qualification in Personal Progress (entry 1).
Units: Year 1: Speaking and listening; All about me; Reading. Year 2: Getting on with other people; Writing.

Course outline

What is the course about?

Study the life stories of someone who has overcome great difficulties in their life and told their story
Discuss their words and experiences and the contribution they have made to society.
Share with the group aspects of your own story and produce a piece of work based on your life experience.
Develop research skills, listening skills, participate in discussions, watch video extracts and go on outside visits when relevant.
Share materials from your own life with the group: personal artefacts, objects, CDs, DVDs, photographs, video.
At the end of the course you will take home a DVD of your work in class.

What topics will we cover?

You can achieve a qualification in Personal Progress (Entry 1), consisting of the following units:
2010-11: Speaking and listening; All about me; Reading
2011-12: Getting on with other people; Writing
- we will produce a group presentation for the end of term Celebration
- students will work on a personal autobiographical project using writing and pictures.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Gain confidence in joining group discussion
- Improve speaking and listening skills
- Participate in a group project
- Produce a written or photographic record based around an aspect of your life
- Contribute to a class presentation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is for you if you are ready to join in discussions, whether you are just starting to speak up, or are confident about it.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work
- pair work
- Practical exercises
- Question and answer sessions
- Recording what you have learned on paper or video, with support.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from the tutor. Self assessment, supported by the tutor. Termly tutor reports. We will assess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on Statements of Learning throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student feedback is encouraged throughout the course. All students have a personal tutor to whom they can give feedback about their courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
