What is the course about?

Learn skills to help you get or keep a job, including communicating clearly, taking responsibility and getting help when you need it, at work.

What topics will we cover?

2010-11: Get things done; Follow instructions; Health and Safety
2011-12: Dealing with problems; Developing communication skills
You can achieve a qualification in Personal Progress (Entry 1).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Communicate more effectively at work
- Develop your strategies to give and receive information, getting over any barriers about literacy, spoken communication, numeracy or ILT
- Achieve more specific individual goals, negotiated throughout the course
- Participate more effectively in group discussion.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is for you if you are preparing to start work or have just started and need to work on basic work skills. You need to have 'later stage' Entry 1 skills for this course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Use digital video and digital still camera to record and document learning
- Visual information
- Tutor demonstration
- Parctical hands-on work
- English and Maths exercises
- Group discussion
- Role play
- Question and answer.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will receive regular feedback from the tutor. Tutor support for self assessment and termly reports. We willa ssess individual planned learning outcomes, and your personal goals, on a Progress Record throughout the course.
