We will examine the significance and importance of Identity and Difference in counselling and therapeutic settings, exploring assumptions, stereotypes and other barriers to working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Exploration and reflection on identity, difference, language, culture and stigmatised identities; improving professional multi-cultural competence and enhancing personal coping strategies.

Introductory: No previous knowledge required. The course is aimed at people who work (paid or voluntary) involved in helping other people, e.g. counselling, social work and health service professions.
We will create a supportive learning environment which will be facilitated by a combination of teaching methods, i.e. mini lectures; pair work; small group work; experiential exercises; student reflection and summarisation of each learning input.
Students should bring to the course a note-book and writing materials. Handouts will be available.
