Course outline

What is the course about?

We will examine the significance and importance of Identity and Difference in counselling and therapeutic settings, exploring assumptions, stereotypes and other barriers to working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

What topics will we cover?

Exploration and reflection on identity, difference, language, culture and stigmatised identities; improving professional multi-cultural competence and enhancing personal coping strategies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Increased awareness of attitudes and behaviour relating to issues of identity and difference.
Gained knowledge and understanding about the impact of assumptions and stereotypes on people from stigmatised communities.
Enhanced skills, knowledge and practice, improving professional multicultural competence and personal coping strategies.
Enhance your interpersonal relationships and effectiveness in service delivery.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Introductory: No previous knowledge required. The course is aimed at people who work (paid or voluntary) involved in helping other people, e.g. counselling, social work and health service professions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will create a supportive learning environment which will be facilitated by a combination of teaching methods, i.e. mini lectures; pair work; small group work; experiential exercises; student reflection and summarisation of each learning input.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students should bring to the course a note-book and writing materials. Handouts will be available.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
