Course outline

What is the course about?

An opportunity to explore contemporary developments of the Person-Centred Approach, beyond the work of Carl Rogers and to consider their relevance to person-centred practitioners and diploma level trainees.

What topics will we cover?

Elements of the structure and content of the course will be negotiated with the group. Topics which might be considered and explored include:

Relational Depth
Configurations of Self
Person-centred psychopathology
Fragile/Disassociated Process
Plural self.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Describe major theoretical developments within the Person-Centred Approach
Consider their relevance to current person-centred practice
Evaluate how contemporary developments fit/do not fit with Rogers’ original theory.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at practising person-centred counsellors or diploma trainees who would like to explore the contemporary developments of the person-centred approach in more depth.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will contain theroectical input and opportunities for personal exploration and reflection on the content in a variety of ways, including group discussions, small group work and working in pairs. You will be referred to key texts and given handouts to read between sessions. While these are optional, you are recommended to read in order to gain the most from the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs although participants may wish to purchase key texts to support their learning. Do bring a notebook and pen to make personal notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
