Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about exploring and practising different aspects of facilitating groups/teams.

What topics will we cover?

Role of a facilitator
Styles of facilitating
Roles individuals may take on in Groups
Stages of group development
Types of interventions to use with groups.

The course assumes that the more aware you are of what goes on in groups the more likely you are to be able to facilitate groups. So time allowing attention will also be given to the often unspoken stuff that goes on in groups but that nevertheless can have a big impact on the atmosphere and tasks of groups.

A suggested reading list will be provided.
.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify different styles of facilitating.
Describe different types of interventions to make with groups.
Identify different roles that often exist and may be desirable in groups/teams.
Outline stages of group development.
.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for anyone new to or wishing to improve leading, working with or training groups/teams. We all have a wealth of experience of groups because we grow up in them: family, school etc. However no specific experience of facilitating groups is needed in order to attend.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

It is an experiential course that includes input on theory and group discussion. There will be individual, partner and small group work. There shall be opportunities to practice facilitating. The experiential nature of the course will require you to be willing to take part in the exercises and discussions and to use your own experience as material to learn from.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Handouts will be provided during the course however please bring paper and pens.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning during and after the course. A sense of progress should become apparent through reflection and from practicing during the course especially through the experiential parts of the course.

You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements that will be verified by your tutor.
.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. At the end of the first day there shall be a short period of evaluation to contribute to the focus of the second day.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
