Course outline

What is the course about?

This counselling approach was developed in the early 80's for problem drinkers by clinical psychologists William R Miller, Ph.D and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. Motivational Interviewing recognises that clients who need to make changes in their lives seek counselling at different levels of readiness to change their behaviour. The course aims to familiarise you with clear strategies and skills you can integrate into your practice in order to increase the inner motivation of a client and so enable change to arise from within, not to be imposed by the practitioner.

What topics will we cover?

The course is an introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI). It will introduce you to the five principles and the five early strategies used in MI. In addition, the course will look at the cycle of change as a framework that can be used to understand levels of motivation for change in clients.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have an awareness of the principles of MI
Understand the cycle of change as a framework for assessing motivation to change
Use some of the core skills that characterise MI
Use strategies for eliciting self-motivational statements from clients.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory one day workshop and no prior knowledge of MI is required. The course is designed for counsellors/psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and professionals interested in overcoming client's ambivalence which is usually a key stumbling block to therapeutic efforts towards constructive change. You will need to have a fluent level of spoken and written English, be able to follow complex information as well as take part in group discussions and role play. You will need to listen actively and be prepared to engage in self-reflection.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

As this is an experiential course, apart from teaching input, there will be opportunity for you to learn through discussion, small group work and participation in role play as well as discussing your own cases where appropriate. In order to gain the maximum benefit.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A comprehensive pack of handouts will be distributed on the day. Participants might want to buy: 'Motivational Interviewing; Preparing people to change addictive behaviour', W.R. Miller & S. Rollnick, 1991, The Guilford Press New York.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
