Course outline

What is the course about?

The person-centred approach to counselling is a relational model, predicated on the belief that we need others to help us know ourselves:personal development doesn’t happen in isolation. This group experience will give you the opportunity to discover more about yourself in relation to others in a safe and constructive climate for growth. The aim of the course is to enhance your self-awareness as a practising person-centred counsellor.
After the first few weeks, this will be a closed group. However, should anyone leave the group, new member(s) from the waiting list may only join at the start of each term.

What topics will we cover?

The curriculum is ourselves. This is not a taught course, but a learning group where you are invited to live and experience the person-centred model and to increase your self-awareness.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Be more aware of self in relation to other
Extend your ability to provide the core conditions
Enhance your capacity to be with others and identify your limitations
Reflect on group processes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will be a qualified person-centred counsellor (to diploma level or above) with an ability to converse fluently in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will have the opportunity of working in a group of 8 people plus a facilitator. The material explored will emerge in the here and now. You are invited to join this group willing to share your experiencing.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. You may choose to keep a reflective journal.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. This course is self, peer and tutor assessed. At regular intervals, you will have the opportunity to give and receive feedback within the group.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will have the opportunity to review the course at regular intervals. These reviews will inform the course as it unfolds as well as your final evaluation of the course.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
