Course outline

What is the course about?

This course offers the opportunity to understand couple relationships and to begin to engage with the fundamental elements of counselling practice relevant to working with couples. Students will explore how couple relationships begin and become established. The course will also examine factors in the development of relationship problems and possible breakdown of the relationship. A well-established model for couple counselling will be explored in detail. In addition students will engage in role-play practice to gain experience of facing the couple in difficulty, practise particular skills to help them, and reflect on the process in a supportive setting.

What topics will we cover?

Relationship as a system
Choice of partners – accident or fate
Projection and bonding patterns
Stages of relationship
Couples in collision
Power & vulnerability
Same sex counselling
The triangular relationship
Skills development & practice.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Reflect on the core theory to couple counselling
Use a range of skills to engage with the ‘couple system’
Link theoretical understanding to practice
Clarify ethics and standards of practice in couple counselling.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for practising individual counsellors and therapists; those working in the helping professions with relevant experience; and students of counselling who are approaching the end of their professional training. The course does not offer a qualification in couple counselling.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will consist of a mix of theory, experiential learning and skills practice. You will be asked to keep a reflective journal for the duration of the course. This will be reviewed by the tutor for your own benefit as well as to give the tutor feedback on your learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.
