How do you work with clients who have alcohol/substance misuse problems? You will be encouraged to draw on your existing skills and experiences to learn new ways of working with addiction. This course is aimed at counsellors, other helping professionals and trainees. It is not aimed at people seeking help for the specific course subjects.

Course outline

What is the course about?

The course offers an introduction to the field of addiction by providing you with a theoretical base as well as practical skills which you can develop and integrate into your working practice.

What topics will we cover?

What is addiction?
The assessment process for addiction
The nature of addiction
Current treatment methods such as Motivational Interviewing, Systems Theory, CBT, Person Centred Therapy.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have knowledge of the nature of addiction
Understand a good assessment process
Understand current treatment methods
Have ideas about how to integrate these into your own practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for trainee counsellors who have an interest in addiction and for professionals who are likely to come across clients with addiction problems. You will need to be a fluent speaker of English, be able to listen to complex information and respond to others as well as take part in group discussion and role plays. You will be required to participate in written exercises.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You should expect a combination of lecturing, group and class dicussions as well as other activities and role-play. In order to gain the maximum benefit from the course it is advisable to read all the material issued by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Textbooks are available in libraries but buying at least one of the recommended texts would be helpful if you are interested in the field of addiction. The tutor will give out a list of recommended texts at the start of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. It is essential to participate in the group discussion and activities. There are regular review periods throughout the workshop. Furthermore, you can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
