The theories of Bowlby, Winnicott and Klein will be used to explore your reactions to bereavement and loss, and increase your ability to help others work through their reactions. Suitable for people in the helping professions. This course is aimed at counsellors, other helping professionals and trainees. It is not aimed at people seeking help for the specific course subjects.

Course outline

What is the course about?

You will gain a greater understanding of issues around bereavement and loss and of bereavement counselling.

What topics will we cover?

Introduction to bereavement and cultural attitudes which affect the way we deal with it.We will also include aspects of attachment theory, Dr Colin Murray Parkes bereavement counselling model, and exploration of your own bereavement issues and coping strategies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

A greater understanding of bereavement issues.
An understanding of attachment theory.
Familiarity with the seven steps in bereavement and loss.
Recognition of own issues, particularly around beginnings and endings.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge required. This workshop is aimed at people working in the helping professions.
You will need to be able to address ideas and issues, which can be difficult, in an educaitonal context.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input and discussion. Experiential exercises in small groups and pairs.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. A reading list will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
