Course outline

What is the course about?

The workshop will increase your knowledge of common mental illnesses and treatment options. It aims to enhance your confidence in working with clients who have been diagnosed and labelled.

What topics will we cover?

The diagnostic framework.
Ways of working with clients who have a mental illness.
The different therapeutic philosophies of psychiatry and counselling and their implications for referral.
Risk assessment.
Treatment options, including ECT and medication.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have a greater understanding of serious mental illness.
Increase your knowledge of the diagnostic framework.
Apreciate psychiatric and other options available in the treatment of mental illness.
Feel more confident in assessing risk and working with mentally ill clients.
Have improved ability to make referrals and talk to other professionals about assessment.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

A course for counsellors, trainees and others who work with people with mental health problems.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input, discussion, questions and answers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. Handouts will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be given opportunities to assess your learning.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
