Shame is a powerful, often hidden emotion. Through experiential exercises, discussion and some theoretical input, explore the many faces of shame, its manifestations and ways therapy can help. This course is aimed at counsellors, other helping professionals and trainees. It is not aimed at people seeking help for the specific course subjects.

We shall look at the origins and manifestations of shame and how, through looking at shame in a caring environment, healing can come about.
The origins and manifestations of shame.The difference between and overlapping of shame and guilt.How to confront our own shame and help others confront theirs.Creative ways forward in healing shame.Theories of Mario Jacoby, Gershen Kaufman, John Bradshaw and others will be discussed.
Have a greater self-awareness and self-acceptance.Gain an understanding of shame and its healing in counselling and therapy.Have an understanding of psychological theory. Have a greater confidence with working with shame and its defences.
The course is aimed at people in the helping professions or trainees. It is also open to anyone who is open to exploring their own shame.
Relevant theory will be presented followed by group discussion. This course is largely experiential and shall use a variety of methods, eg visualisation, movement, pair and group work, drawing, poetry and story as triggers to access your feelings.
Photocopies of relevant theory, poetry and bibliography will be handed out on the course.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion.
