What is the course about?

The course is to enable professionals with caring/pastoral responsibilities to develop appropriate skills to support this area of their work.

What topics will we cover?

Identifying roles and responsibilities
Ethical and safe practice
Boundaries and limits of help
Counselling and counselling skills
Developing counselling skills
Supervision and support
Working with others.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify limits of roles and responsibilities in helping others
Recognise the importance of confidentiality
Differentiate between counselling and counselling skills
Use a range of appropriate counselling skills and interventions
Know when they might need support and identify what might be available.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to individuals who want to develop counselling skills to support professional duties in non-counselling contexts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be contain a mix of activities including tutor input of theoretical aspects, large group and small group activities, counselling skills practice in pairs/triads. Participants will be invited to reflect on how the course content could be incorporated into their working role.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs. You may find bringing a notebook and pen useful for recording your learning.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
