Course outline

What is the course about?

This experiential workshop will introduce you to the theory and practice of psychodrama. You'll be invited to try improvisation exercises that develop a sense of play, creativity, collaboration and being in the 'here and now'. Individuals will have the opportunity to practise primary psychodrama techniques, reflect upon their therapeutic value and share personal insights. Time will be given to enact personal issues in mini psychodramas and rehearse more creative ways of being. Reflective feedback from peers and tutor will be encouraged in addition to Question and Answer. Although personal material will be used, this is an educative workshop rather than a therapy session.

What topics will we cover?

Attention will be given to team building and improving spontaneity through a variety of improvisation exercises in pairs, small and large groups. Psychodrama theory will be delivered with special attention to primary techniques which will then be practised through role reversing, doubling and taking the role of director.
We will also explore several psychodrama vignettes for processing and sharing. The tutor will be supportive throughout and will encourage all participants to join in and enjoy the day.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Increase your capacity for spontaneity.
Identify primary psychodrama techniques.
Identify and practise the role of Director.
Describe and practise the technique of role reversal.
Outline the benefits of maintaining the 'here and now' in a therapeutic setting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for anyone interested in this model of counselling/psychotherapy. No previous therapy or acting skills are required. It is not suitable for those in acute need of therapeutic help.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The day will offer some teaching input, although you will mainly learn through experience.
There will be role play, improvisation exercises, question and answer sessions and pair/group work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. A list of recommended reading will be given.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will also be opportunities for peer feedback and self-reflection.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
