Course outline

What is the course about?

This workshop will introduce you to the psychodynamic approach to counselling and psychotherapy.

What topics will we cover?

The historical background to current psychodynamic practice.
Key psychodynamic concepts and techniques; the use of transference and counter transference; the unconscious and interpretation.
A comparison with psychoanalysis and humanistic approaches.
Case studies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Describe key elements of the psychodynamic approach.
Recognise some differences between this approach and others.
Outline the application of this approach to certain situations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Introductory Level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input and discussion; experiential work in pairs and small groups; using your own histories; role play exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. A reading list will be given.

Recommended Reading:
Jacobs M. Psychodynamic counselling in Action, Sage (1988).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
