Course outline

What is the course about?

An introduction to Eric Berne's Transactional Analysis (TA) model of counselling and psychotherapy. An approach that you can use to facilitate the achieving of autonomy and the enhancing of interpersonal relationships.

What topics will we cover?

Berne's concept of personality using his internal Parent, Adult and Child (PAC) structural ego state model.
Analysis of interpersonal transactions using his PAC functional ego mode model.
Theory of Games and Strokes as a way of understanding patterns of relationship.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Name the core concepts of TA
Explain the principles of how a TA therapist works with clients
Describe the PAC model
Draw consciously on ego states to communicate in different situations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Open to all. Eric Berne chose to be open and simple with plain English because he wished TA to be accessible to everyone. Please bear in mind that you will gain more from this course if your understanding of English enables you to follow the presentations on the topic as well as the instructions for the skills exercise. You will increase your level of satisfaction on the course if your level of spoken English enables you to participate in the small and large group reflexive dialogue.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be theory supported by handouts. You are encouraged to find your own level of comfort in the group dialogues and in the facilitated small group experiential learning. We will agree a co-operative contract to support your learning. A list of references will be offered if you choose to explore the subject further. No work will be done outside the class unless you choose.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. You are welcome to read any book on TA or surf the internet for more information. Please bring pen and paper if you want to make notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
