Course outline

What is the course about?

Reading, understanding and speaking the language of emotions. Work on the concepts and skills of Emotional Literacy to enhance your relationships.

What topics will we cover?

The function of your emotions.
Ways to help you develop an increasing awareness of your own emotions and the emotions of others.
Reading your own emotions, knowing what you feel and the cause of the emotions stirred in you.
What you can do, when you sense the emotions of someone else, to help you understand why they feel the way they do.
Practical skills to help you develop an emotional vocabulary that can help you get more of what you need.
How to use your new skills to communicate and connect in your personal and work relationships.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Know more about what you feel
Understand what can cause emotions in you and in others
Discover what others feel
Communicate what you feel with more confidence
Begin to experience more fulfilling relationships
Begin to heal the hurt in relationships.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Open to all. Please bear in mind that you will gain more from this course if your understanding of English enables you to follow the presentations on the topic as well as the instructions for the skills exercise. You will increase your level of satisfaction on the course if your level of spoken English enables you to participate in the small and large group reflexive dialogue.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be theory supported by handouts and mixed media presentations. You are encouraged to find your own level of participation in facilitated experiential learning in small group and in the larger group dialogue. We will have a co-operative agreement to encourage and support your learning. You will not have to do any work outside the class. Follow your own desire to develop your own emotional literacy by continuing to practise the skills you will have learnt on the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to acquire and read Achieving Emotional Literacy by Claude Steiner (2004), London: Bloomsbury, but it is not a prerequisite for the course. You will be offered a reference list to assist you if you wish to further explore the topic. Please bring pen and paper if you wish to make notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be opportunities for you to review your learning and you can expect constructive feedback from your tutor and fellow students.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
