Course outline

What is the course about?

This two-part workshop will explore the key physical, psychological and emotional changes in adolescence, the effect that these have on the relationship with parents and carers and the benefits of supporting these changes and maintaining good communication with a young person. In the second session, we will focus on strategies to maintain good communication.

What topics will we cover?

An introduction to key aspects of the psychology of adolescence
The challenge of forging an identity in adolescences
The parent-child relationship in adolescence
Communication skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Describe key aspects of adolescent psychology
Outline the role of the parent/carer at this crucial time
Explain and use a range of strategies to support and sustain good communication.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

None, other than an active interest.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The workshop will include some teaching but will focus mostly on class and group discussions and activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
