Course outline

What is the course about?

This 1 day interactive workshop introduces some of the principles, techniques and approaches to creative and lateral thinking.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover a range of creative and lateral thinking techniques including some pioneered by Edward de Bono and other creative thinkers. We will examine some specific case studies from business, the arts and science to see how the application of lateral thinking can produce novel results.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Explain 2 ways to challenge assumptions.
Actively differentiate between 'thinking' and 'thinking on your feet'.
Demonstrate how to change your focus in order to achieve different insights.
Solve some puzzles and conundrums by using lateral thinking.
Identify how some creative individuals and businesses have applied lateral thinking to get results.
Describe 2 core principles of creative and lateral thinking and how you might apply these to your own life.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is at an introductory level and so you do not need any prior knowledge of creative or lateral thinking, just a curiosity about it, an open mind, a willingness to try things out and participate in a range of discussions and exercises. To benefit from this course you need to have a good level of spoken English. If you are unsure, please see an advisor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The workshop is highly participatory and interactive. The ethos of the workshop is that creativity and lateral thinking is something that can and should be coached rather than taught. It will include some games, puzzles, individual exercises, small group and whole class discussions, case studies and some mini lectures from the tutor.
You are encouraged to use and reflect upon what you learn in the workshop, outside and beyond that class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

you will be given a list of recommended books to read in your own time but you do not need to purchase any books.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be asked to complete a course evaluation form at the end of the course. Your views are essential to planning future courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We recommend the following complementary courses:
Right brain coaching - will show you some more techniques
Get your ideas to fly - will help you to put your ideas into action
Get off the fence - will help you to make/make better decisions.
