Course outline

What is the course about?

On this course we will examine the relationship between our body image and self esteem. The picture of our body which we hold in our mind is a reflection of the attitudes of and interactions with others. Our body image is elastic and open to change. The fashion industry and the media in general holds an unobtainable and ever changing standard over us, and in trying to attain this unreachable standard we are guaranteed to fail.
How are we to cope in a world with such rigid expectations? How do these attitudes and pressures affect our sense of self?
This course title should not be confused with 'body language' which has a differnet emphasis.

What topics will we cover?

Exploring attitudes and feelings towards our own bodies.
Examining how images and messages from the media influence how we see ourselves.
Understanding the impact of body dissatisfaction on self-esteem.
Practising skills and developing insights to encourage a more self-accepting attitude towards ourselves.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Express your attitudes and feelings in relation to your own body image.
Discuss the impact of the mass media on body image and body dissatisfaction.
Outline the connection between negative body image and low self-esteem.
Plan to develop a more realistic expectations of yourself.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge required. An ability to share and discuss ideas is very important.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The workshop will include group discussion, exercises in pairs and small groups, opportunities for individual reflection, tutor input and use of media images. Handouts will be provided.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pen and paper. Handouts will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Tutor feedback both individually and in groups. There will be opportunities for you to reflect on and review your learning.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
